Book Review - City of Bones

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I picked up the first three books in this series at Changing Hands for my recent trip to Florida. I thought they would make good airplane reading and they did.

Clary Fray appears to be your average teenager living with her very cool artist Mom in NYC. She and her best friend Simon go out to a rave club one night and Clary sees an attack by three teenagers on another and an apparent murder. The problem is that no one else can see them and the body disappeared before her eyes.

Turns out, Clary comes from the Shadowhunter society where humans with magical enhancements fight off demons who prey on mundanes (or humans as we like to be called). There are your standard paranormals in here. Fairies, vamps, werewolves, etc. and even mentions of angels.

The first book follows Clary as she tries to make sense of her new world view and is romanced by Jace, one of the young Shadowhunters. It's a YA book so the characters are overdramatic but kudos to the author for not shying away from real world issues.
