Great Sports Day
Friday afternoon found me at the FBR Open. One of my buds scored corporate tent passes for us so it was free drinks and food the entire day.
We got there shortly before noon and stopped to watch one threesome tee off before heading to Corporate Village. All of the big sponsors set up big platforms overlooking the course and they stock them with beer, wine, hard liquor and lots of food.
The domestic light beer available was Coors Light so I "slummed" by drinking Amstel Light. They give you a punch card to limit you to 10 drinks. I pity the person who hits 10. That's out of control. What's funny is that half of the bartenders don't even bother checking off your card so you could go over 10 without anyone stopping you.
Friday's lunch options were grilled chicken, salmon, green salad, potato salad, potatoes au gratin, soup, roast beef sandwiches, big cookies and cheesecake. I didn't try everything but what I did have was great. A couple hours after lunch, they put out the second round of food. Taquitos, nachos and ice cream is what I saw. I was still full from lunch so I passed.
The thing about the corporate tents is that it's much less about the golf and more about schmoozing. I talked to a guy from the hotel at Fort McDowell casino about possibly holding Parrot Grande there and I chatted up a few potential new club members. The view of the course from where we were sitting was limited but it opened up enough to see one of the groups coming through. Turned out to be the same one we saw teeing off so I saw the same threesome twice and saw no one else.
Leaving the Open is a challenge. The parking lots are 1/2 mile to 1 mile away and they run shuttle buses. The problem is that the lines to the buses are poorly designed and it turns into a huge CF. We decided to hoof it back to the car so we did manage to get some exercise in besides doing 12 ounce curls.
After the Open, I headed over to Glendale for the Sting game. The Sting hadn't played for 2 weeks and they showed it. The expansion team New York Titans started out dominating the Sting. There defense was swarming and they got the first two goals. Then, my guy Dan Dawson made his move. He scored two quick goals and ended the night with six goals in all. They don't call him Awesome Dawson for nothing!
Dan also got mauled. There was one sequence where he got heavily beaten with sticks and knocked down twice. I was screaming, "Quit knocking Dan down!" I meant it, too. He limped for a couple of shifts but then he seemed to be OK.
We found something new to giggle at. There's a penalty for holding the opponent's stick and it got called a couple times. We were all hee-heeing about it being bad form to hold another man's stick...not that there's anything wrong with that.
The Sting won, 16-15, but it was tense at the end. The Titans had one last shot on goal right before time expired but it went wide, thank goodness. I don't know if my voice would have held out for overtime.
