Ships and Dip 4 - Costa Maya
Our first stop on the cruise was to Costa Maya, Mexico. I read some post-cruise comments from some of my fellow travelers and they weren't very impressed with it. I can understand why because there's not a lot to it. A small shopping and drinking area right when you get off the ship, a pyramid and lots of jungle.
We, regardless of what was there, enjoyed the day immensely! I guess it's sometimes just what you do and whom you do it with.
The bulk of our group went on a bike/kayak trip while our smaller group of Mary, Norene, Blondie and I went to the beach. Blondie was in charge and found us the bus (after I made us all have an initial cocktail) and it was a very short drive to our stop.
There was a little shopping area to pass through before we got to the beach. A guy approached us but Blondie shooed him away. A second guy approached us and I let him talk to us. Good thing as he became our waiter for the day.
His name was Sammy and he's from East LA originally and we got his whole romantic story before the day was over. We also got many buckets of beers (6 for $10! - the cheapest we drank all week).
We just had a blast sitting under our palapa on the beach. Lots of laughing, people watching, storytelling and just enjoying each others' company. Despite the rain, of which there was quite a bit, we never scampered inside like some of our beach companions did. (Like the Guster group which was at the tables next to us.)
To top it off, our bill (with a hefty tip) was $100 for food and drink. $25 each for a perfect afternoon is a small price to pay.
We headed back to the port and ran into the rest of the gang. The rest of the time in port was spent singing, dancing and drinking at a big, open bar. Another blast was had by all. Our peeps were kayaking when the rains came so they were all soaked but they had a good time.
Would I go out of my way to go back to Costa Maya? Doubtful. Will I remember it as a special, wonderful day with friends? Always.
