Tales From Rocky Point - Google It!

We listened to Radio Margaritaville at the beginning of the weekend until someone finally realized they were replaying concerts all weekend and that meant we were going to hear the same 30 songs or so...over and over and over. So, the Pirate Captain hooked up his iPod and we listened to several playlists.

It was fun to play the "who's that?" game with each other. His selections are somewhat eclectic so the artists weren't always obvious. Somehow the conversation turned to Steve Goodman. Rick, Julie and TRS didn't know who he was. We told them, "you may not know him but you know a lot of his songs." We started listing them off, ending with City of New Orleans.

Rick jumped on that song. "No, he was too young to do that. It was written by Arlo Guthrie, Senior!" (The emphasis on Senior was his.)

You gotta give the Pirate Captain credit, whether he's right, wrong or indifferent, when he says something it's an emphatic, overwhelming declaration. He was so powerful that Catnip and I, though we both knew we were right, started doubting ourselves.

To answer the question, we turned to Google which led us to Wikipedia which confirmed that Steve Goodman did indeed write City of New Orleans. He also got Arlo Guthrie to listen to it and record it. The song became a hit in 1972.

(BTW, Arlo Guthrie's Dad was Woody Guthrie and I don't think there is an Arlo Guthrie, Junior or Senior.)

The Captain took a beating on the whole thing and spent much of the rest of the evening nit-picking everything we said to prove we were wrong. I hope it made him feel better.

That one Google led to many more. We looked up the year the Magna Carta was written, the release dates of a bunch of Harrison Ford movies, the Snopes story on Jamie Lee Curtis' alleged hermaphroditic status...and probably a bunch of other things that I've forgotten. You had to be pretty sure of your facts because we didn't hesitate to check them out.
